On March 16th, more than a dozen U.S. Senators wrote to Unerwriters’ Labortay urging them to speed along the process of UL certifying E-85 pumps.
Remember, UL said some months ago E-85 was so corrosive that it could not certify pumps.
It is politics versus science:
POLITICS: According to Sen John Thune, South Dakota’s Republican: “I think what we need more than anything else is we need some quick action on this. This is a real problem for ethanol infrastructure in this country.”
As for Indiana’s Republican Senator, Dick Lugar, he agrees. “That’s very serious, and our office has tried to intervene to accelerate whatever consideration they’re giving.”
SCIENCE: But Senators, … patience. Patience. You can’t speed science. UL has said it has to look at the research data; it has to develop requirements; … and then the manufacturers have to submit their products, before anything can be certified.
In other words, UL doesn’t work like Congress who, for political reasons, keeps pushing ethanol beyond where science justifies it.
