Diverting food products to make biofuels is foolish: Indian finance chief
March 26, 2008
Indian Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday said that, “As citizens of the world, we ought to be concerned about the foolishness of growing food and diverting it into fuel.”
The Indian finance chief condemned the “very insular selfish approach” that encourages the U.S. and other western countries to convert food into fuel. “I think it is the most foolish thing that humanity can do.”
“There are non-food items that can be produced to make biofuels,” he noted. ”To convert corn to fuel… I think it’s outrageous and it must be condemned.”
